My work has been through many incarnations, it has been installation based, sculptural, and interactive, but underpinning all this is the notion of colour as a concept and a powerful tool in conveying chaos theory at play. The concept or idea becomes the system, the system becomes the process, and the process becomes the machine that makes the painting. Structure and sequence are key. Carefully planned layers incorporate different techniques and trap photographic images; images themselves that capture elements of change engineered by man. My approach to painting is like that of a scientist conducting experiments, using predetermined parameters that often create surprising results. Controlled randomness is achieved by distancing myself from the work emotionally and even physically, drizzling or splattering paint from greater and greater heights. I no longer use anything as artful as a paintbrush, choosing instead to use tools that are intended for more process led applications. Still appealing though is the pure organic fluidity of paint. Playing with the natural order of things; pouring and controlling, or allowing. While not setting out to produce a pleasant aesthetic beauty, irrational and unexpected results occur that often fulfil and satisfy the receiver in surprising ways.
