A visual artists collective

A small piece of ochre pigment incised with a grid of scratched marks dating back more than 70,000 years was found recently in a cave in South Africa. It is the earliest evidence yet of the human capacity for symbolic art. The ability to think on an abstract level seems to be uniquely human. This simple step opens the door to art, language, mathematics, science and all forms of intellectual communication.

chart is a small, British based collective of visual artists interested in this evolutionary milestone and the ability of art to communicate on an intuitive and intellectual level.
The artists have a particular interest in the links between all the arts and sciences, and in structure, time, words, numbers and symbols. They share a deep sense of the connectivity of human experience, our relationship with nature and the importance of spirituality. References to all these elements are evident in their work.

The name chart was chosen for its association with maps, grids and journeys. It reflects a desire to explore the concepts outlined above and discover meaning and structure in life through art.
The identity of the group is characterised by its multi-disciplinary make-up including sculptor, painter, printmaker, ceramist, photographer and conceptual/installation artists underlining the way art is a universal means of communication whatever the chosen media or ‘language’.
